The use of a portablegrindstone is also impracticable for most of the positions indi-cated, and very expensive. To scrape by hand the surface ofthe girders and remove several coats of hard dried paint wouldrequire a large force of men and a long time in execution. Theuse of acids or other solutions is practically forbidden becauseof the danger of damage to traffic in the street. Consequentlythe proposition narrows down to the use of a sand blast and asoldered joint. The contract for the Brooklyn system wasmade by George B.
