y from Naples should be providedthan the long and expensive carriage tripwhich, from the time the cable road wasstarted until recently, was the only methodavailable. With this end in view they consid-ered a number of plans for the constructionof an electric railway, and finally adopted thesuggestions of E. Strub.the well-known engi-neer of Zurich, Switzerland. Mr. Strubsplans embraced the employment of ordinaryand rack sections, to be operated by electricity,at an approximate cost, including right of wayand power station, of $237,500 (1,250,000Fr.). The length of the completed line fromResina to the base of the cable railway is 4.5miles (7.5 km), and the distance can be cov-ered in 48 minutes, including stops at theintermediate stations. It will be seen, there-fore, that cars can be started from each end of the line atintervals of 35 minutes, which give twenty trains in eachdirection every 12 hours. Counting thirty passengers percar the daily capacity of the line would be 600 persons.

APPROACH TO THE LOWER STATION OF THE CABLE RAILWAY May 7, 1904.) STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 693 However, as in the past the cable railway has never beenobliged to carry more than 300 people daily, the capacityof the new line should be ample for a long time to come. Inthis connection it should be noted that the topof Mt. Vesuvius is too small in area to permitthe accommodation of a large number of peo-ple at one time, and, besides, the fare fromNaples to Vesuvius and return is so high ($4),the line is not likely to be overcrowded. Ofcourse, this high fare is due to the fact thatthe railway may be utterly destroyed at anytime. If necessary, the capacity of the linecould easily be doubled without using muchmore power by building turnouts and arrang-ing- the schedule so that when a train is goingup the mountain another is traveling downtoward the valley over the rack road. ROUTE As shown in the accompanying profile ofthe complete line, the grades between Resinaand San Vito do not exceed 8 pe
