Under the heading, Number of Cars, isrecorded the entire number of cars in operation upon the lineduring that half-hour; opposite this under the heading.Average, is recorded the average number of passengers upon asingle car as counted at one of the busiest points of the line bythe conductor, for both the up and down trips. In the actualkeeping of this record the average numbers of passengers forboth down and up trips are inserted in pairs opposite the num-ber indicating the cars in service, in black ink for the downtrips and in red ink for the up trips (the red ink numbers ap-pear in black in the accompanying sample sheet, but may bedistinguished readily from being the lower of the two averagenumbers). The average number of passenger-, riding upon asingle car of the line during any half-hour is calculated from 7oo STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL.

The obtaining of these countednumbers of passengers in each car,from which to calculate the averages,presented at first a serious problem,but was solved in an interesting man-ner. At first slips were given theconductors in addition to their daycards upon which to record at somedesignated busy point of the line theactual number of passengers in thecar at that time, the number of pas-sengers being obtained by countingand not by reference to the register, asit is desired to provide for the maxi-mum number of passengers riding ona car at the busiest point of the line,which cannot be obtained by referenceto the register. The trouble encoun-tered was that the conductors werecontinually losing their passenger re-port slips, and the records turned inwere thus made indefinite. It was alsoan easy matter for a conductor not toreceive the blank passenger slip, and,furthermore, it was an easy matter fo
