nt size from very small beginnings, was naturally a some-what patched up affair, with the consequence that the workingwas not at all economical, the number of separate stations beinga great disadvantage. The whole railway needed thoroughlyremodeling, and a careful investigation of the condition ofaffairs soon showed that very little could be done by any furtherpatchwork. It has formed a consider-able additional attraction to Douglas in the eyes of the travelingpublic, and has done much to enhance the success of that popu-lar holiday resort. Quite apart from the electrical equipment the constructionof the line was an engineering achievement of no small merit, and very serious difficulties were encountered, and innumerableobstacles had to be overcome. This is the highestpoint in the line, being some 330 ft. above sea level. For somedistance the line runs alongside the high hoad, but never leavesits own specially constructed right of way; there is a run downto Garwick Glen, a steady rise to Ballabeg, and then anotherrun
