become obsolete forcity work. There are plenty of cities where center poles arestill used, but the number in use is on the decrease rather thanon the increase. Although they are more sightly than the sidepole and span wire construction, street railway companies havefound them objectionable on account of danger that accidentswill occur by passengers and employees being struck with thepoles, on account of the small clearance between the car andthe center pole. Wire netting is necessary to protect all win-dows or other openings where there is a possibility that passen-gers or employees will stick out heads or arms where theymight be struck in passing center poles. This netting in itselfis objectionable, and even where it is present, it is not alwayspracticable to so completely cage in the passengers and em-ployees that they never get hurt in this way.
