plow, and by which the wingis moved from one position to theother and held steady while in opera-tion, a brace is provided, 5 ft. 2 ins.long, which rigidly connects the cen-ter of the wing while extended tothe plow body. The inside end ofthe wing is attached to a heavy sillwhich slides upon a 3-in. verticalbolt at the side of the car. This axisfor the wing is heavily liraccd bymeans of two iron braces, i in. x 6in., running to the center and op-posite side of the underframing andreinforced bv verttcal braces. (Vol. XXL No. 13. gives a construction which is substantial enough to withstandthe efifect of the great leverage necessarily brought to bear onthe end of the wing, which not only has to remove the new snowfrom the other track but has to throw the snow removed by thenose to one side. Thesewindlasses are operated by vertical hand-wheels at the insideof the plow. The upper part of the nose is stationary but thelower part is made so as to slip up and down, the lower part ofthe sheet-iron with which the nose is faced overlapping thejoint, as shown in the drawing giving details of the nose.Ordinary steel rails are placed vertically behind the nose, whichserve as braces and guides and give the desired rigidity to themovable lower part.
