NDARD TRACK CONSTRUCTIONWITH T-RAIL IN DENVER with its closely spaced ties, is a partial abandonment of theplan of depending entirely on concrete stringers for track con-struction. Continuous rail-joints are used extensively. Bonding has been done with various types of bonds, Crownbonds being very popular with the management. As to the life of track, one example can be cited which ison Woodward Avenue, near the Campus Martius, where carsoperate during some partsof the day under 1-minute.headway.This track had been laid thirteen years up to 1902, when it waspractically worn out, as the wheel flanges were touching the 534 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXII. No. 9. 1 bottom of the grooves. The depth of the flange on new wheelsof the Detroit United Railway is ^ in. In the city track construction which has been done this yearby the Detroit United Railway a novel concrete mixing outfitdevised by John Kerwin, superintendent of track, has beenused. Two views of this outfit are shown herewith.

CONCRETE MIXER USED IN TRACK CONSTRUCTION IN DETROIT In the process followed in Detroit there are no piles ofcement, stone or sand dumped on the street. The car shown inboth views in the foreground is the one which is equipped withthe concrete mixer. The mixer is driven by a motor, which issupplied with current through a fish-pole connection with thetrolley line, as seen. The two cars seen in the rear are supplycars for bringing sand and stone. There is a track on each car,and when the three cars are coupled together the tracks on thethree cars are connected by fish-plates. When the supply carsare empty they are taken away, and two more open ones shovedin in their place. A small dump-car operates over the trackson the cars, and the cement, stone and sand for the concrete isdumped into this car. The car holds a cubic yard of stone,Yi yd. of sand and y2 barrel of cement. The sand is placed inthe car first. The cement is spread on top of the sand. Thisis done on the second car of the tra
