s offour 125-hp motors and receives current from other contact-shoes on a third rail when operating over private right of way,or from an overhead trolley pole when traversing city streets.The car is so long that it is necessary to have two trolley poles,one at each end. The electrical control is of the multiple-unittype, so that the cars can be operated either singly or in trainswith equal facility. This car is of peculiarly strong construc-tion, a steel sub-framing made from 9-in. I-beams and heavycross strengtheners being placed beneath the wooden sills ofthe body. Cross seats of the walk-over type are used, and thecar contains a smoking compartment and toilet room. The length of the first car is 19 ft. over all, with a 14-ft. body,of the second car 41 ft. over all with 32-ft. body, and of thelargest car 473/^ ft. over all with a 39-ft. 4-in. body. THREE EXAMPLES OF DEVELOPMENT IN CAR BUILDING ond is the standard city or ordinary interurban car, which hasreplaced the horse car on the streets of our large cities andwhich is used in suburban work throughout the country. Thethird car is the latest type of interurban car, which, although ittraverses city streets for a small part of its run, is in generalintended for operation over private right of way and under con-ditions almost identical with steam railroad practice. The horse car is intended for the city system of Merida,Yucatan, a 34-mile horse road operating in that city. Verylittle attempt has been made to improve on the design of the equipped are 4500 lbs., 40,000 lbs. and 74,325 lbs. The horse caris intended for operation on a 3-ft. track gage, and the othertwo run on the standard 4-ft. 8^-in. gage. The horse carwheels are 30 ins. in diameter, but have a %-in. flange. TheNorth Jersey car has wheels 33 ins. in diameter, and the Aurora,Elgin & Chicago car has 36-in. wheels
