The electric trains are run, of course, without inter-rupting steam traffic. Trains are made up of two or threemotor cars and an equal number of trail cars, and the motorsare controlled by a system somewhat similar to that used onthe Berlin elevated railway, and described in this paper forJan. 3. The third rail is located between the ser\ice rails, andis supported on porcelain or ebonite insulators. The motors are shunt wound, of 80 hp each, and are mounteddirectly on the axles. Shunt-wound motors are employed sothat they might be used as generators when the train is coast-ing or running down grade. It has been found that 10 percent of the power can thus be saved. The most modern of the three Vienna roads, having been putin operation in 1902, is a three-phase, high-tension road atWoll
