.Commencing with 1904, it is promised that we shall have thecompletion of the subway for the north and south travel. EastRiver bridge No. 2 for the Brooklyn travel and the New Yorkand New Jersey tunnel for the New Jersey travel. It has forsome time been generally recognized as a foregone conclusionthat the completion of these improvements in 1904 will havebeen discounted in advance by the increase in population andthe number of passengers seeking transportation. From themoment these new transit additions commence to operate it iscertain there will be more people who want to ride than theycan comfortably carry. It is now our purpose to consider theadditional facilities as briefly as possible and to show their re-lation to one another and to the existing lines on ManhattanIsland. MUNICIPAL SUBWAY .\ND ITS TRAFFIC CONNECTIONS To speak of this important work in the singular number, asis now generally done, indicates that, in public opinion, it is (anuary 17, 1903.) (Vol. XXL No. 3. associated with the single tunnel from City Hall, Manhattan,to 104th Street and the two branches, one to Spuyten Duyviland one to Bronx Park. The Spuyten Duyvil branch is tohave two tracks from Spuyten Duyvil to 137th Street and threetracks from 137th Street to 104th Street. The Bronx Parkbranch is to have three tracks from Bronx Park to JacksonAvenue and two tracks from Jackson Avenue to 104th Street.The traffic from these two branches converges at 104th Streetand is to be carried to the City Hall on four tracks. This isthe subway as it will be opened to the public about the begin-ning of 1904. Ever since the subway became an assured fact the public safety of operation may be estimated with considerable ac-curacy. Any transportation expert will bear witness that trainsrunning at 30
