the canal, for the purposeof building and operating thereon an electric railway fortowing canal boats. This franchise is good for thirty yearsfrom the beginning of operation, and requires that the canalshall be equipped from Cincinnati to Dayton within two andone-half years after the date of the grant, and from Dayton toToledo within four years thereafter. The franchise also pro-vides that the speed of towing shall not exceed 4 miles an hour,foreign boats must be towed for a reasonable charge, and theordinary operation of the canal must not be interfered with.All construction is made subject to the approval of the Boardof Public Works, and in case the franchise lapses or is aban-doned the owner may remove all his materials and apparatusfrom the canal lands. To carry on this work the Miami & Erie Canal Transporta-tion Company was organized and took over the franchise.The Cleveland Construction Company, of Akron, Ohio, wasengaged as engineers, and under its direction active work on

This is nearly complete, and is now in operationfrom Cincinnati to Middletown, about 42 miles. There is butone summit level, which is 395 ft. above Lake Erie and 512 ft.above the Ohio River, and is 23 miles long, beginning 100miles north of Cincinnati. Three artificial lakes supply the high levels. The Lewistonand Loramie reservoirs, containing 9000 acres of water, feedthe summit level, and the Grand reservoir, containing 17,000acres, empties into the canal about 7 miles north of the summit,at St. Marys.
