and during the present year this figurehas been brought down gradually, month by month, until itreached 1.2 per cent in June, the lowest in the history of thesystem. This low record is due to a combination of circum-stances, such as an efficient corps of trainmen, careful traindespatching, a good claim department and an efficient generalmanagement and operation. EXTENSIONS AND IMPROVEMENTSThe tramway company has extended two of its lines duringthe last four months and has also pursued a general policy ofimproving its track and overhead work throughout the city. Amile and a half of new track has been laid as a part of a newWashington Park line in the southern part of the city, the con-struction consisting of 65-lb., 60-ft. steel T-rail, laid on Texasheart-pine ties. The extension is single track and completes aline 5^ miles in length from the loop.
