. A large amount of businessalso comes from the Boston & Maine Railway, which touches 298 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XXII. No. 9. Troy, but not Albany. Express cars earn onan average 75 cents per car-mile, and thecost to operate is about 65 cents per car-mile,the long lay-overs being accountable for thehigh cost of operation. The earnings frompassenger cars are 20 cents to 22 cents percar-mile, while the cost of operation is onlyfrom 12 cents to 13 cents. The express carsare all of the single-truck type, and have acapacity of about 10 tons each. ROLLING STOO.The management of the company is astrong believer in the use of single-truck cars.It is claimed that frequent headway withsmall cars gives better service than longercars on less frequent headway, and, further-more, that during the rush hours the crowdscan be handled with greater rapidity with thesmall cars than with large ones, since passengers can get in andout quicker.
