FIG. 1.—ELEVATING GRADER which overcome many of the difficulties encountered in the oper-ation of machinery of this class. Those who are familiar with elevating graders in general, areaware that heretofore the entire draft of the plow has been broughteither directly or indirectly on to the machine. This, ofcourse, has been a drawback to its successful operation inmany classes of soil, and has necessitated the expenditureof more power than should really be required to movethe amount of earth handled. The National elevating grader, as shown in Fig. 1,overcomes this difficulty. The draft of the plow itself iscarrried direct on the evener. being transmitted by a heavydraft chain which passes the king bolt and is hooked to theplow standard. This chain is intercepted in front of theelevator by a spreader bar, which can be raised or low-ered as the conditions require, thus regulating the angleof the pitch, assumed by the plow point.
