VIEW OF THE ELBE RIVER AT HAMBURG burg was owned by the Pferde-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft,which was founded in 1864, and its first line was put inoperation on Aug. 16, 1866. This road was in a prosperouscondition up to 1877, which may be accounted for by thehigh fares which it was the practice at that time to collect.In 1877, on account of the increased traffic density, themain line was changed over to steam, which step proved asuccess from an engineering as well as financial standpoint. In 1870 the Hamburg-Altonaer Pferdebahn (the presentHamburg-Altonaer Centralbahn-Gesellschaft) was found-ed. This company, even up to the present time, is an inde-pendent company, and will probably remain so for a longtime, because the companys financial and other conditionsare not conducive to fusion with other roads. For some the Hamburg-Altona-North-Western Tramway Company,Limited, which was. later called the Hamburg-AltonaerTrambabn-Gesellschaft.
