THREE-CAR TRAIN steam railroads have been forced to give serious consider-ation to all matters of electrical development. It was atfirst thought that the steam roads would be threatened bya new and dangerous sort of competition. Up to the pres-ent, however, this has proved to beonly for local traffic, and it is aquestion with the leading steamrailroad managers whether thisloss has not been more than coun-terbalanced in most cases by theeffect of the electric railways asfeeders to the main lines. In NewEngland the steam railroad com-panies adopted a somewhat differ-ent course in dealing with the sub-ject of electric lines in their terri-tory than in other parts of thecountry. The New York, NewHaven & Hartford RailroadCompany purchased control of thelocal railway systems at certainstrategic points along its route, asat Meriden and Stamford, and hasalso equipped with electricitysome of its branch lines.
