ts running their entire length. At the en-trance to the car house are offices, messroom and stores. The generating plant consists of two direct-coupled400-kw sets. The engines are of the cross-compoundtype, capable of developing 720 brake-hp with a steampressure of 150 lbs. at the cylinders when running at 90r. p. m. The main shafts are 19 ins. in diameter, and onthese the generators and fly-wheels are keyed. The latterare 18 ft. in diameter, and weigh about 24 tons. The cylin-ders are fitted with Corliss automatic valve gear. Thecontractors for the whole of the plant and equipment wereDick, Kerr & Company, Ltd., London. The generatorswere built for them by the English Electric ManufacturingCompany, Ltd., Preston, at whose works they were putthrough a most severe test by the engineers of the com- pany, Alfred Dickinson & Company, Birmingham, whowere highly satisfied with the way in which their specifica-tion had been met. DOUBLE TRUCK OPEN CAR are generator panels, three feeder panels, one a stationpanel, one a lighting panel and one a leakage panel. Twoof the generator panels only are in use, the other being aspare panel. Each is fitted with a positive and negativequick-breaking switch capable of carrying 1000 amps., amagnetic circuit breaker and an ammeter reading fromzero to 1200 amps. Two of the feeder panels are in use,the other being held in reserve. Each is fitted with anautomatic circuit breaker of the same type as those used onthe generator panels, an ammeter reading up to 500 amps.,and a quick break switch for connecting feeder to bus-bar.The main station panel is fitted with a main ammeterreading up to 3000 amps., on which the total output of thestation is constantly shown, and a recording wattmeter.It is also fitted with a recording voltmeter with a workingpressure of 550 volts.
