motor brushes and graph-ite paint for trolley poles were all included in the exhibit. Asouvenir pencil, with puzzle attachment for the button hole, af-forded food for reflection bythe studiously inclined. THE GARL ELECTRICCOMPANY, of Akron, Ohio,had a display of especial interestto interurban roads. This com-pany has a block signal systemfor single-track roads which canbe used either as a visual oraudible signal—when the latter,a blank cartridge explodes in thesignal box whenever two carsapproach each other within amile. Combined with this blocksystem is a portable telephone,which can be used for communi-cation with the main office overthe signal wires. The main officecan also signal a train to stop atany signal in case of a change oftime. This company makes a sec-tional fish pole for telephoneconnection from the ground toa telephone line wire, or pair ofwires, anywhere along the line. EXHIBIT OF WM. WHARTON, JR., & CO. secretary and treasurer, and M. Garl, superintendent, were in at-tendance. 1104 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XVI. No. 44. HANNA & GRAY, of Chicago, attended the convention as rep-resentatives of the Peckham Truck Company, Jewett Car Com-pany and the St. Louis Car Wheel Company. The firm was repre-sented by both Mr. Hanna and Mr. Gray, and had many com-pliments for the most elaborate souvenir given at the convention.This was a very elaborate reference and report book for railwayofficials, and was compiled through the courtesy and with theassistance of prominent members of the Street Railway Account-ants Association of America. The book consists of many pages,printed on thin bond paper, and ruled off with spaces for enteringthe principal data and records of street railway operation. Spaceis left for similar data of succeeding years, so that five to ten ormore years operation can be compared. The book is arranged inthree parts, or main division
