Text Appearing Before Image:
NES on the Champ de Mars and the Trocadero Hill was givenout so lavishly to meretricious, salacious sideshows thatthere was no room left for the main Exposition or for ob-jects of real value and merit. The money available for aTransportation Building was expended so generously onthe one in which very few appropriate exhibits can befound that when it came to provide for the overflow, noth-ing more could be done than to erect the meagre, cheapsheds which are here shown, and which, as a general thing, the building is in reality a series of low train sheds. Alongthe white front the names of the different countries arepainted, for guidance, and within are a large number oftracks connecting with the steam railroad network ofFrance, so that cars, locomotives and rolling stock ofstandard gage have been able to come right in and beswitched and shunted into position. For pieces not ofstandard gage special sections of track have been set up.Between the tracks extend long stretches of plank plat-
Text Appearing After Image:
TRACK ENTRANCE TO TRANSPORTATION BUILDING, VINCENNES can be reached only after the expenditure of considerabletime, money and patience. Yet even this division, exas-perating as it is, does not quite represent the confusion andmuddle, for street railway apparatus is to be found—whenfound—in no fewer than five different- parts of the show, and there are not less than six distinct, different sectionsin which transportation exhibits, generically considered, have been placed. There may be more, when all the ex-hibits have finally got into place. If this is borne in mind, form up and down which visitors move in inspecting theexhibits. As a general thing, heavy rolling stock has beenplaced at the inner end of each track and the street cars atthe outer or receiving end. Outside the building are otherreceiving tracks for freight cars, etc. The United Stateshas inside the building about 22,000 square feet, of which16,000 square feet is net, and and a little over 400 feet ofthe exterior track.
