d,and the company formed for the construction of the roadbelieves that the entire line from Warschauer Strasse to theZoological Garden will be completed in 1901. Part of thisline will be built underground, the other part elevated. The permission to build a deep underground road hasnot been granted up to date, but the Company for the Con-struction of Underground Roads was able to celebrate on Sept. 1, 1899, the successful completion of the Spree Tun-nel. This tunnel, which leads from Stralau to Tfeptow, isremarkable in many respects. It is the first undergroundpassage which in its entirety is built in quicksand, and thefirst in Germany to be excavated exclusively by means ofthe breast shield. The electric road, which utilizes thistunnel, starts from the Schlesische depot, passes throughStralau, and ends at Treptow, and in the tunnel a speed of13.5 km. per hour is attained. Omnibus andcab owners are at present experimenting with automobiles.Whether it will be possible to train a set of men so thatthey can operate these vehicles, especially heavy busses,without danger to the pedestrians, through the crowdedstreets of the Metropolis is a question which the futurealone will answer. To describe all these various means of transportation invogue in Berlin, however, is not the intent of this article,but to consider only the most important road, namely theGrosse Berliner Strassenbahn. Nor will the history of thisroad, which was founded in 1871, be considered.
