CONNETT Your readers are probably well aware of the fact that thetrolley has taken extremely well in France, and that nowall cities are or are about to be equipped with it, Paris be-ing the one prominent exception. In some of the largercities certain streets have been excepted, and for relativelyshort districts the trolley is forbidden. The most promi-nent cases of this partial exclusion of the trolley are inLyons, Bordeaux and Nice. In these three cities the trolley. Of its total street length of 6150 meters (3.81miles) 3520 meters (2.18 miles) are in the city of Paris, andof this 2650 meters (1.64 miles) are trolley; the rest, viz.,870 meters (0.54 miles) in conduit, is divided into two shortsections, each of about equal length, one at the PlaceDaumesnil and the other the Paris terminus at the PlaceBastille and the Rue de Lyon. CURVE CONSTRUCTION, SIDE SLOT CONDUIT—PARIS French Thomson-Houston Company has built or is build-ing the electric conduit system in place of the trolley uponthe sections where the latter is not allowed. In Lyons 3600 meters (2.23 miles) of conduit track is inoperation; in Nice 6000 meters (3.72 miles) will soon be inoperation, and in Bordeaux 4000 meters (2.48 miles). It is not exactly true to say that the trolley lines are ex-cluded entirely from Paris. The Cie. Generale Parisiennede Tramways put in electrical operation in November,1898, its Bastille-Charenton line, and this is almost wholly Company, and has been deservedly very much praised, noexpense having been spared in the construction and equip-ment to make it a model road. In appearance, at least, theoverhead construction has never been excelled or evenequaled elsewhere, as can be seen from the engravingon page 852.
