—a station capacity largerby far than that of any railway terminus in the world. A plan of the Southern Terminal is seen in Fig. 4, anda section in Fig. 6. From these the location of the loopcan be readily understood, and it will be seen also from thecurvature of the outer loop (262-ft. radius) that it is only ina station of such enormous size that a scheme of this kindis feasible. The platform capacity of the two-track loopin the subway is sixty cars, each 40 ft. in length, a capacitygreater than will probably be called for for some years tocome; and the inner loop will be used only if the trafficshould eventually exceed the capacity of the outer. Pass-sengers will enter the main station and pass down stair-ways to the loading platform, which is that between thetwo tracks, and which will accommodate 25,000 peopleat a time. Here will be gates and penstocks, from whichthe trains for given lines will depart, and these penstockscan be filled before the arrival of the train. The unload-
