424 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. (Vol. XV No. 7. space had been occupied by half the same capacity inbelted machinery. The boiler capacity, however, was in-adequate, so that a new boiler house was added, adjoiningand just west of the existing station. Reconstruction wascommenced late in 1897, and, owing to the continuousdemand for power, the new generating apparatus andboilers had been installed singly, so as not to interferewith the continuous operation of the plant. Gradually allof the old machinery was removed, and the existing stationnow represents a harmonious arrangement, and one fullyup to date as regards modern methods of electric engineer-ing. There is not a piece of machinery now in the stationthat was there when the installation of the new machinerybegan. The difficulty of the changes can be appreciatedwhen it is stated that current to the former capacity ofthe plant was furnished continuously for the operation ofthe road during the progress of the installation.
