Joints are placed sometimesopposite, sometimes broken,and there is not yet any wellsettled practice on this point, al-though the tendency is toward the opposite form. The natural advantage of brokenjoints is held to be neutralized by a peculiar and highlydisagreeable rolling motion of the car when the joints areseriously down, while with opposite joints the motion ofthe car is far less unpleasant, although perhaps slightlymore noisy when joints are very poor.
