BRASS FOUNDRY Fig. 6 illustrates the furnaces and crucibles in the brassfoundry at the repair shops of the Chicago City Railway.The particular feature for which this illustration is pro-duced is the method of providing an individual air blast foreach furnace pit. The air is conveyed from the storagetank in the header pipe located against the wall, and is di-rected by means of the descending pipes directly into eachfurnace. Each pipe is fitted with a cut-off slide valve,which regulates the flow to each pit. As has been pre-viously noted, it is the practice in this repair shop to manu-facture all the brass and copper work for overhead line pur-poses or car trimmings. The cupola for melting the babbittand lead for journal boxes and for lining the cable carryingsheaves is also made here, as are composition metal gripdies, trolley wheels, and, in fact, all the brass and coppersupplies that are required.

This consists of three cast roll-ers, which are set vertically in a solid cast frame, but arerevolved horizontally by means of shafting and gear placedunder the floor and driven by a belt from the main shafting.The rollers are attached to adjustable guides, which slideback and forth in channels in the main casting and the twoinside rollers are adjusted by means of large set screws, asshown. The belt is shifted and machine started by meansof hand levers placed above the main casting, as shown inthe illustration. By means of this machine rails of any sizeare readily bent to any arc by passing them repeatedlythrough the rollers. The rails are handled and adjusted bypneumatic hoists.
