CONSTRUCTION OF PLANT Excavation for the power station was begun Sept. 1,1897, the material being shoveled directly into cars on thesiding leading on to the property. After the excavationdeepened, and the grade became so heavy that this methodbecame impractical, two machines were used, one a bucketconveyor, the other a traveling hoist. The total excava-tion amounted to about 35,000 cu. ft. As the walls and the foundations proper of the engines,as well as of the building, were of concrete, hand mixingwas out of the question. A machine mixer was thereforeerected. It was about 20 ft. x 16 ft. and 32 ft. high, and although largely experimental, did good service, turningout on some days over 500 cu. yds. per day of twenty
