The Knoxville (Ky.) Street Railway Company has pub-lished a notice to the effect that on the first of January andJuly of each year it will present a suit of clothes to thosemotormen who have not cost the company more than $5because of accidents during the preceding six months. A bill has been introduced in the New York Legislatureproviding that whenever a company in any city or villageof the State pays its operating expenses, maintenance, re-pairs, interest and fixed charges, and then earns 5 per centon its capital stock, it shall issue a transfer ticket to all itsbranches for a 5-cent fare in the middle of the day, andshall sell thirty tickets for $1, good between 6 and 8 a. m.and 5 and 7 p. m. At a recent meeting of the Electrical Section of theFranklin Institute, following a paper w hich I read on theBooster System in Railway Work, there arose somelittle discussion on the question of cost of operation. Ihad made the statement that, other conditions remainingconstant, the cost of operation at the power-house wouldusually be about the same, whether the booster were inoperation or not ; in other words, that the power used bythe booster unit, when in operation, would be deductedfrom that otherwise required for the rest of the plant,leaving the total the same. This statement, I am confi-dent, will be found to hold good under ordinary condi-tions, while in cases of excessive drop on the feeders, theadvantage would undoubtedly be with the booster on thescore of economy.
