age dailycar mileage of the system is 1550 miles. The company has two car houses, one at the powerhouse and one in Norristown. At this latter are situatedthe repair shops, the dimensions of which are 20 ft. x15 ft. The shops are well equipped with all necessarytools, including lathes and drills, for making quick repairson all parts of cars. The cars at present in operation are 18 ft. long, andwere built by the Jackson & Sharp Company and theLewis & Fowler Manufacturing Company. It has beenthe experience of this road that 16 ft. to 18 ft. closedcars and ten-bench open cars are more economical thandouble-truck cars. The cars are mounted upon Peckhamtrucks and are equipped with Consolidated heaters. West-inghouse and General Electric motors are used with steelgears and pinions, and steel and composition trolley wheelsare employed. The officers of the company state that theyhave found the average life of gears to be about eighteenmonths, and the life of pinions about eight months.

CROSSING WITH PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD Trolley wheels are usually good for about 30,000 miles.The cars are run on the country sections at a speed of15 miles per hour. There are now twenty motormen and twenty conduc-tors employed on the different lines, and the men arepaid I2^c. per hour. About five men are employed in therepair shops and car houses, and they are paid $45 permonth. The men work 11^ hours per day. It is the companys intention to build about 15 milesmore of track in the near future, which will connect thissystem with the Union Traction Companys lines atChestnut Hill in the city of Philadelphia. When the plansfor these extensions have been fully determined, a re-arrangement of the power house will be necessary, andprobably two power houses of much greater capacity thanthe present one will be required.
