Each drives a Schvtckert dyna-mo. The fields of these dynamos are excited by accumu-lator cells charged from a lighting circuit. An interesting and novel feature of this station is arotary transformer with a capacity of 450 h. p. which pro-vides the reserve for Sundays and holidays. It is compo.sedof two dynamos connected on to one axle, the armature ofone wound for 220 volts, which is the potential of the light-ing circuit, the other 550 volts. Depending upon circum-stances, each of the machines is able to serve as a motorand operate the other as a generator, so that the machineacts as a reserve for the two services. 156 STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. The track is laid in Broca rails, seventy-three poundsto the yard, with a gauge of thirty-nine inches. The roadis single track, with frequent turnouts, and hasnumerous curves, the sharpest having a radius ofsixty-one feet. The Grand Place of Roubaix is the startingpoint of the three systems, and the traffic being con-siderable, two feeders are brought to it—one aerial,the other under-ground. The trolley line is sus-pended from span wires stretched between latticedpoles, and some very pretty overhead work is tobe seen where the line crosses the canal at severalpoints over lift bridges, as in Fig. 5. The generating station occupies a place inthe old Laboureur Depot.
