g the Union Elevated loop and part ofthe Lake Street Elevated. The accompanying engraving shows theIjoiler room, which is efiuipped with ten .Standard water tube boilersof 400 h. p. each and Murphy mechanical stokers. The coal is thrown from the cars in front of the building into ahopper and is carried by a convejor to an elevator which raises it tothe top of the hoppers, where a distributing convejor carries thecoal to the various hoppers as it is required. The a.shes from thefurnaces are discharged into the basement into steel cars, where anelevator raises them into a hopper from which they are dischargedinto a railway car or barge. The design of the whole plant is to make it automatic in everyrespect, and this has been accomplished in a marked degree. Afterthe coal has been .shoveled from the cars, no manual labor is requiredfor the operation of the plant, as the handling of the coal and ashesis entirely accomplished by machinery and was installed by theLink Belt Machinery Company.
