PROPOSED RAIL JOINT. which requires the milling out of the head of the rail on the outsidefor a di.stance of nine inches on either side of the joint. The wear-ing .surface here is furnished by the end of the joint plate which isbrought up flush with the top of the rail. A wheel passing over thejoint cannot cause the hannner blow as it travels on the joint platewhen crossing the joint. In no place is there a complete break inthe rail. Elmira & Horseheads Railway Company, of Elmira, N. Y. An ap-peal was taken by the defendant to the Circuit Court of Appeals,and the latter has filed an oxjinion sustaining a number of claims ofthe mo.st important character. After this latter deci.sion, the de-fendant applied to the .Supreme Court of the United States, for awrit of certiorari, which has been denied, and a final injunction hasbeen i.s.sued.

San Francisco Notes. The Market Street Railway Company began running its SecondStreet electric line from Folsom to Market Feb. 3, transferring atFolsom to the new Bryant-Braunan Street line. Feb. 6 the Hollisfranchise electric line was started, completing the crosstown line,via Fillmore Street, from the bay shore near the Golden Gate to thebay shore near the Union Iron Works—a distance of s)4 miles.Feb. 14 the Oak Street double track cable road, changed to a singletrack electric line, was operated for the first time, and the cars, in-stead of climbing a 12 p. c. grade, begin climbing a 5 p. c. grade andthen a series of )i^and I p. c. grades, returning down the 12 p. c.grade. The Siitro road opened on Feb. i as scheduled. It is generallyconceded that there is room for such a road in the territory traversed,and its business has been excellent from the start. When the Metropolitan Railway Company was absorbed into theMarket Street Company its lines were remodeled to suit the linesalrea
