X 16 ft., besides end windows anda large monitor ventilator. The engine room has ten largesemicircular window openings hung with double sash and sixsmaller pivoted windows at the ends. The monitor in theengine room is simply used for light, as there would be are built extra heavy throughout to withstand the severevariations of the railway loads encountered, each flywheelweighing 32,000 lbs. The governors have safety stops toprevent dangerous racing, and the cylinders are fitted withmetallic packing. The l)oiler room contains a batteryof 450 li. p. of water tube boilers, to-gether with feed pumps in duplicate,drip pump and auxiliary feedwaterheater. There is space for the additionof a duplicate battery of boilers withpumps, etc., as shown. The boilers areconnected by wrought iron breechingand flue to the stack stub supportingthe stack. The stub plans are shownin Fig. 21. The stack is of steel, selfsupported, 140 ft. high and 6 ft. 6 ins.in diameter, and lined with firebrickto above the roof level. It is securelybolted to the heavy cast iron founda-tion ring which is anchored to thestub by six 2^ in. bolts, 22 ft. 6 ins.long. This stack is designed to pro-vide for future extension to the plant,and is of sufficient height to counteractany loss of draught due to proximity tothe Palisades. A duplex vertical airpump and condenser is located in awell in the engin
