The main steampipe, which extends the whole length ofthe run, is provided at intervals with shortstand pipes having ball and socket jointsand clamps by which they may be readilyconnected with the supply pipe leading tothe hoisting engine. The engineers cabis located at the front right hand corner,in a position from which he can watch theshovel and the signals of the attendantson the barges, and which is provided withlevers for operating the throttle valve, pis-ton and brake. The automatic shovel is ofthe standard size, and of about one toncapacity (Fig. 3.) It is operated by meansof a chain which embraces a sprocket pul-ley on the shovel and terminates in a bobat the arm weighing about 800 lbs., whichon being released takes up enough slackin the chain to close the shovel when thehoisting engine is started.
