e poles. At last, how-ever, permission was granted to put up anoverhead line on Scotland street, and onSaturday, April 16, the road was openedfor exhibition trips. The length of road that is equipped isabout 2,700 feet. Two Stephenson cars bushing placed outside of the brasses andabsorbing all disagreeable vibrations. By this arrangement the springs sup-porting the body of the car can be main-tained at the standard capacity, and theease of riding is in no way affected by themotor underneath. Connection is made between the motorand the axle by means of a gear and pin-ion, the gear being placed upon one of the ten miles an hour is maintained on thecar. The car can be operated from eitherplatform and be driven in either directionat the will of the operator with either acurrent of the full intensity or in part asmay be desired. The trolley that is used to take the cur-rent from the wires is of a special construc-tion. Two wires are used, one of which isfor the return current. The trolley hascopper wheels that are insulated from eachother, and which run upon the wires, tak-ing the current from one, allowing it topass down through the motor on the carand thence back through the oppositewheel and wire to the dynamo. All of the opening day, the oar was kepttraveling up and down the stretch of trackthat had been equipped for it. Many peo-ple were drawn thither out of curiosity tosee the electric road, and all were given anopportunity to ride. Many of these wereladies, and one of them testified moststrongly and unconsciously to the great ad-vantage that is claimed for mechanical mo-tors, namely, their cleanliness. After aride
