Text Appearing Before Image:
is the act whichaffects city railways, and in accordancewith the mandate of the law, the JerseyCity & Bergen Street Railway Co. have be-gun to make their rules to conform withits provisions. The result, as any one canplainly see, will be that in many cases carconductors and drivers will be prohibitedfrom working when there is work thatthey wish to do. The mischief in the actlies mainly, it would appear, in its twelveconsecutive hours clause. Por example,a conductor who gets the early morningrun of, say four hours, and then has whatis called a swing, until night, will be unableto accept that nights work because it wouldfall in time beyond the twelve consecutivehours. Suppose he knocks off at 8 a.m., and has until 4 p. m. before going onduty again. At that hour twelve consecu-tive hours will have passed, and the lawforbids him to work. This will be suffi-cient for prefatory purposes. The follow-ing copies of documents will explain the rest. Jdne, 1887 THE STREET RAILWAY JOURNAL. 493
