A writer in a recent number of HarpersMonthly, in describing the city of Valpar-aiso, Chili, says:—The oddest thing to beseen is the female street car conductors. amusement with the young men abouttown. Fellows who make a business offlirting with the conductors are calledmosquitos in local parlance, becausethey swarm so thickly about the cars andare so great a nuisance. The conductors,or conductresses, are usually young, andsometimes quite pretty, being commonlyof the mixed race—of Spanish and Indianblood. They wear a neat uniform of blueflannel, with a jaunty Panama hat, and amany-pocketed white pinafore, reachingfrom the breast to the ankles, and trimmedwith dainty frills. In these pockets theycarry small change and tickets, while hang-ing over the shoulders is a little shoppingbag, in which is a lunch, a pocket-hand-kerchief, and surplus money and tickets.Each passenger when paying his fare re-ceives a yellow paper ticket, numbered,which he is expected to destroy. CROSSING FOR CABLE ROADS. this patent, which is applicable, accord-ing to the specification, to numerous oth-er purposes in addition to the one de-scribed, and the claims cover broadly themethod of welding and tempering metalsof hardened structure, with special refer-ence to the continuous welding, temperingand laying of rails. It is stated that theoperation of welding and tempering bythis process takes place much faster, andcan be effected at less expense, than thelaying of the ordinary joints, the time oc-cupied in making a periect weld being lessthan half a minute. The joints thusformed are said to be considerably strong-er than the rest of the rail, and to with-stand any amount of pounding or strain. The advantages of Mr. Ries latest inven-tion appear to be of considerable import-ance and value from a practical standpoint,especially in view of the success alreadyattained in the new art of electric welding.It is well known that a very large proportionof the expense for maintenance
