er than their standardit will be necessary to harness the horses totheir car in tandem. This arrangement oftandem driving is perhaps the best forfreight hauling, but for the transportationof passengers it is out of the question. Atfirst it was thought that the traction of carsin the streets by horses would greatly in-convenience the movement of the heaviertraffic, and that the rails must be put inout-of-the-way positions, but the engineershave come to the conclusion now that it ispreferable to place them directly in thecenter of the street. This arrangementhas the effect of dividing the movement,and thus giving an opportunity for circu-lation upon the right and left of the track,aud furthermore leaves the approach tothe sidewalks perfectly free. In London tramways are constructed inthe following manner:—They first cut inthe center of the street a trench which isfilled with beton, having a thickness ofabout 9 in. Upon this beton the cross tiesare plaoed, and the stringers are in turn
