the Citizensroad of St. Louis has been let to O. W.Meysenburg & Co., and by them sublet todifferent oompanies. The California systemis used. The iron work is made and theconstruction clone by St. Louis parties.The Portland cement is to be furnished bythe Empire Warehouse of Chicago, whohave furnished cement for the cable roadsof Chicago, Kansas City and Omaha. Powerto propel the cables and cars is fui nished clearance. An iron jacket lined with asbestossurrounds each cylinder, forming a non-conducting material which very materiallyreduces the amount of cylinder conden-sation. A decided improvement has beenmade in the dashpot, which now gives alarge and well lubricated slidiDg surface,the supply of air being regulated by ahaud-screw, the whole being entirely en-veloped by a cast cover which keeps outthe dust and confines and mufHes the air soit works almost noiseless. CORLISS ENGINE FOR THE CITIZENS CABLE KOAO OF ST. LOUIS, MO. necessary, and are connected with streetsewer if possible. This system of drainage allows the unob-structed passage of water from the mainconduit into the vaults, thence to the citysewers, thus securing perfect drainage forthe entire road. By adoption of the above-mentionedvaults, we are enabled to reduce the sizeof the main conduit to a depth of two feetand a width of 15 in. at largest section,thereby materially reducing the first costof construction. The slot rail used allows the grip to becarried nearer the street surface than in anyother system, and is formed with oval cor-ners, preventing the fastening of horsesshoes wbich are endangered by sharp cor-nered rails.
