For a number of years there have beenexperiments which have been directedtoward the placing upon street cars of amotor which would be practically inde-pendent of any central system, and at thesame time provide sufficient power for thepropulsion of the car in its ordinary workof the day. In cases where the experi-ments have been made with steam, the dif-ficulty of reducing the weight has appearedto be the great obstacle to be overcome,the difficulty arising from the fact thatlarge weights of fuel and water must be other changes than the attachment of themotor. No changes of any kind were madein the framing or design of the car, andthe only change in the platforms was thatof putting a heavier flooring over the tim-bers
