ed that a double track road can be built on this system for $63,000 per mileat San Francisco prices, with iron at $80 perton. The fastenings for the rails may beof various styles, but those shown consistof a chair with a lip dropping down overthe lower flange of the rail, holding it inposition. The system has been endorsedby many engineers and is in use on somelines in San Francisco. A curious contradiction of what we havealways been accustomed to look upon as afixed fact, comes to us from France. It isa direct statement that in some cases it ismore economical to use animal than steampower. M. Sansom states that upon the Mont-Parnasse-Bastille line of railway hehas found that steam traction has cost 57francs per car per day, while with horsesit only cost 47 francs. We have no detaileddata in regard to the matter, but think thatit must be due to a very small number ofcars hauled; although we were given tounderstand that the contrary is the case. This is the largest journal of its kind.
