all come down to the ferry on oneline of rails and though there is sidingroom for seven lines they all convei-ge intothe up track before they have gone twoshort blocks. During the busy hours of the morningand evening, many of these lines are runupon two minutes headway and none onmore than five. It therefore frequentlyoccurs that from fifteen to twenty oars are rows of holes, each row having a hole in aline radiating from each minute point uponthe dial of the clock. There are one or two small wooden pinsfor each line of cars and the positions thatthese pins successively occui^y, denote thetime at which the car upon the line towhich it belongs ia to start. We have shown the indicator with thei pins in the position that they will occupy atten oclock in the morning, just as theheadway is beginning to lengthen out afterthe rush trips. despatched in fire minutes. As all of thesecars are run upon a strict schedule time itis necessary that the starter should havesome simple means of performing his du-ties. He is placed in a small office in the cor-ner of the ferry house, next to the downtrack and close to the cross walk wherethe cars stand while waiting for the sig-nal to leave. He can thus note every caras it comes in and make a memorandumupon a slate of the trip upon which it be-longs. The walls of the ofBce are hungwith time tables, all within easy reach, ofthe time of departure of every car for thetwenty-four hours. On the outside of the building there is alarge gong; the number of strokes that aregiven upon it indicating the car that is tostart. In order to avoid confusion, and the ne-cessity of making out a large time tableth it would sooa be worn out, the starterhas an indicator of which we give a fullface illustration. It consists of a plain ma-rine clock, with a copper casing set aroundthe outside. This case
