Investigator (ship, 1882)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Steamer Investigator (1882) fast on the Reef. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA), 18 August 1910. On 'Wednesday morning the Marine Board received the following telegram from Captain T. C. Wotton, the harbormaster at Wallaroo, concerning the wreck of the Adelaide Steamship Company's steamer "Investigator" on Cape Elizabeth, Spencer Gulf.:-"Vessel ashore, south-east end of reef; all rock. Apparently total wreck, Main hold, stokehole, engine-room, and aft full, and ebbing and flowing with outside water. Fear vessel's back broken."

REMOVING THE CARGO. Moonta. August 17. The tug Wato arrived on the scene of the wreck of the steamer Investigator at noon to-day from Port Adelaide. The schooner Mary Webster, driven by motor power, was put into requisition to assist to lighter the cargo at about 1 o'clock Friday, and it is expected that she will continue till all is completed. Up to this evening she had only been able to remove kerosine, timber, and other deck cargo. Work was then stopped until to-morrow morning. The hold cargo is under water and cannot be got at until the water is pumped out. To this end the pumps brought by the Wato are being fixed. The hole in the bottom, which is under the engine-room, will be centred. Two horses are on board, but no passengers. The Euro left at 4 o'clock this afternoon for Port Adelaide to take the place of the Wato. A party of gentlemen went from here to the scene of the wreck this afternoon. and Captain Joss, in conversation with one of them, said if the weather kept fine he had every hope of getting the boat off all right. Had the vessel attempted to cross the reef 30 yards nearer Cape Elizabeth she would have passed over safely to a sand ridge, from which it would have been easy to pull her off. As it is she is firmly fast on the reef. All the cargo is to be taken to Wallaroo, where it will be sorted. Some local storekeepers have hundreds of pounds worth of goods on board. Fishermen still affirm that the Investigator will never get off the reef. The diver has been down and made a thorough examination but his reports are not available.

Built in 1882. 605 tons. 1884 taken over with Spencer's Gulf SS Co., 1918 grounded on Wardany Island and broke up.
