How rapid is the flight of Time, even -when mea-sured in periods of years, as it passes swiftly away,like natural objects in the retrospect of the steam-home traveller! It seems but as yesterday, thatthe first number of the volume before us was thrownupon the piablic at a venture, and behold we arealready summoned to write a preface—not to recallor amend the irreclaimable year that has past, but,in a review of it, to foreshadow the next. In doingthis, the first questions are, under what influence,and with what views was the work undertaken ?To the first, the ready answer is—under immediatenecessity to do something for an honest livelihood;and for the rest, the enterprise took its form froman old and habitual desire to make our labours sub-sidiary to the amusement and welfare of society.
