Summary[edit]
DescriptionThe Pleasance "harbour" - geograph.org.uk - 558117.jpg |
English: The Pleasance "harbour" A Banqueting hall was constructed here in 1414 in the grounds of Kenilworth Castle. The double moated earthworks formed a rectangular enclosure and the central area contained the banqueting house and gardens.
When Queen Elizabeth I visited Robert Dudley at Kenilworth Castle in the years 1566, 1568, and 1575 no expense was spared and the Pleasance was laid out at pleasure gardens. Water pageants were provided for Elizabeth's entertainment at the mere, a large defensive lake complete with its own "harbour", still visible as this bed of rushes, for visiting the Pleasance. |
