Five oryx grazing in the desert scrub.

The Oryx (Oryx gazella) is actually a native animal of Africa. It was first imported to New Mexico in the 1960s by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish to establish a big game population for hunters. Between 1969 and 1977, 93 oryx were released onto White Sands Missile Range. Today, there are more than 3,000 animals on the missile range. No oryx are found within White Sands National Park thanks to a 67-mile boundary fence that keeps them from entering.
