It is easyenough and desirable enough to seewhat has been done, but it is abso-lutely essential that we be able to perceive what the college might dorand what the college should do. Growth and improvement is ex-pected, and with the opening of eachschool year there is universal delightexpressed with increased members,considered by most people as the onesure index of prosperity. Our friendsmust remember, in this connection,that increased attendance means morecourses of study, more instructors,more laboratory equipment and morebuildings and that these cost moneyand, in an institution giving trainingin technical subjects—science, agri-culture and engineering, very largesums are necessary to provide shops,machinery, live stock, and labora-tories which are absolutely neces-sary. 58 The New Hampshire College Monthly present time is an engineering build-ing. The departments of mechanicaland electrical engineering, drawingand physics are housed in three differ-ent buildings in the same space theyoccupied 17 years ago when therewere less than one tenth as manystudents as we now have in thesedepartments. For several years stu-dents have been turned away fromthe course in chemistry, because onlysix men can be admitted to the courseeach year on account of lack of labor-atory room. Further, advanced workin chemistry is denied students inagriculture, engineering and generalscience for the same reason. Thescience building (Conant Hall) shouldbe devoted wholly to chemistry aswould be the case were an engineer-ing building erected. A domesticscience department should be estab-lished at once, but it is impossible atpresent owing to lack of room. Withthe drawing rooms, which are nowovercrowded, removed to an engineer-ing building, space would be avail-able for domestic sci
