Summary[edit]

Description
English: The MacAdam Cairn John Loudon MacAdam (1756-1836), of road-making fame, came to Muirkirk in 1790 to manage the Earl of Dundonald's tar works at this location. He later bought the business. The works produced tar (used mainly on ships' hulls), coke, lampblack and varnish. The works closed in 1827. All that remains is the commemorative cairn, built from stones from the original kilns. (Source: "The River Ayr Way", by Dane Love). The summit of Cairn Table is visible in the background.
