owed has been immortalized on the stage byShakespeare in his Richard II., and, as a picture ofone of the dramatic events which happened in earlytimes in these old castles, it may be repeated here astold by the annalist Stowe. The Duke of Lancaster, says this writer, enteredthe castle all armed, his helmet excepted ; King Richardcame down to meet him, and the Duke, as soon as hesaw the King, fell on his knees, and, coming nearer untohim, he kneeled a second time with his hat in his hand,and the King then put off his hood, and spoke first :c Fair cousin of Lancaster, you are right welcome. The Duke, bowing low to the ground, answered :4 My lord, I am come before you sent for me ; thereason why I will show you. The common fameamong your people is such that ye have, for the spaceof twenty, or two-and-twenty years, ruled them veryrigorously, but if it please our Lord, I will help you togovern better.
