Troop-trains were only one of the components of the vastmasses of rolling-stock which overflowed every railway yardand siding. The fighting millions at the front had notonly to be reinforced, but to be fed, supplied, and muni-tioned. Countless freight-trains of box-cars were filled withfoodstuffs and equipment, cattle-cars with cavalry remounts,flat-cars piled high with bulky tarpaulined artillery. Asone neared hostile frontiers, wagon roads vied with railwaysin feverish life.
