At12.56 P.M. sighted and engaged a two-funnelled cruiser ahead.Lion fired two salvos at her, which took effect, and she disappearedinto the mist burning furiously and in a sinking condition. It would appear that only the Lwn among the big shipsactually fired, the remainder arriving in time only to seethe German cruiser, which was the Mainz, lying on her beamends with only a propeller and her starboard quarter show-ing, while a heap of wreckage marked the spot where theKoln had gone down.
